Why Nerds On Site …. (Services Offered)

Monday, December 20th, 2010

Imagine you have just received the final copy of your website, and you realize you forgot a couple important things. What other services does your Developer offer?

At Nerds On Site we maintain constant contact with you to provide progress reports in order to ensure the project is going on task. We don't simply show you what is done, we ask you what is needed and offer suggestions on making it better, thus giving you the incite and ability to see what needs to be changed or even removed. This is offered simply as part of our work ethic in developing your project.

Once the development is done, we are still in contact after in case there are a few minor changes, and we often will do that free of charge. But for those people that do not wish to maintain and update their own site we do offer our Hosting NerdCare protection plan. This often encompasses the updates needed to keep the site current, 24/hour hack detection, updates to the content of the site, not to mention if you host with us you can centralize your cost. What I mean is, the average person would have to buy a domain name, and then renew that based on the time frame they purchased for. Then they would have to buy a hosting account which they pay monthly for. In some cases people will own multiple domain names that link to their site, but they will have purchased it from multiple company's. So now you may have 3 set's of renewals to keep track of. Where if you host with us, it is all taken care of and centralized.

What good is a website if it is not going to be properly maintained from all levels?

Check back next week when we cover why "Graphics", can be so important when hiring a developer.

Why Nerds On Site …. (How Big is Their Team)

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

How Big is Their Team? The size of a development team can be important to you depending on the versatility of the team members. If they are all fluent in programming, then there really isn't much diversity. It is rare to find the jack of all trades when it comes to software development, which is why a team of 3-5 unique developers is often better than an individual themselves.

With Nerds On Site you have the expertise and knowledge of Nerds worldwide working together to better themselves and to provide their clients with fast, accurate and effective services. Our Development Team ranges in the type of projects we do, but in the end we are always available for one on one assistance. More often then not during our weekly meetings we are inquiring about potential problems with an ongoing development project, or offering solutions to each other. We are in constant communication which allows for a development project to be created more efficiently and accurately for you. We can run ideas off each other, or divulge a secret we used when developing a similar project in the past, our ability to assist is endless compared to that of an individual working by themselves. And in our case, just because we have a bigger team, it doesn't mean you pay more. It's just the way we do business.

Check back next week when we cover why "Services Offered", can be so important when hiring a developer.

Why Nerds On Site …. (Professional Manner)

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

Professional manner - Do they sound confident in what they are offering? Do they sound trustworthy? Do they understand completely what your looking for and effectively deliver based on your requests?

The thing with businesses of any kind is they often talk in their own lingo. Thus making the client/customer feel unintelligent which is never a good feeling. The ability to speak with confidence is also attributed to your ability to understand exactly what the client wants and communicate it in an ongoing process those steps needed to facilitate their requests.

Nerds On Site representatives adhere to a code of conduct not just because it is mandatory, but because they believe in the principle fundamentals it demonstrates for business. You will never see us show up in jeans and our favorite summer t-shirt. When you do speak with us it will always be with a courteous and enthusiastic tone. And when you work with us, we will always keep you informed on the progress of the project so that you can feel confident in the quality and accuracy of that project, after all it is yours. We may be the technical experts putting a project together, but we never forget that you are the visionary.

Check back next week when we cover why "How Big is Their Team", can be so important when hiring a developer.

Windows Phone 7 Launched Oct 11th

Monday, November 15th, 2010

With the recent launch of the Windows Phone 7, I think the major thing they did to set themselves aside from others is the "Live Tiles" function which basically makes everything accessible from one screen.

For Gamers, one aspect they are taking advantage of is the X-box live feature where you can play games through your account via the phone and your X-box live account.

Another potentially beneficial aspect is for those using Microsoft Office, the "Office Hub" Let's you sync directly with so you can have all your important data with you on the go if needed.

Carriers:

  • AT&T
  • T-Mobile

Devices:

  • Samsung Focus
  • LG Quantum
  • HTC Surround
  • HTD HD7
  • Dell Venue Pro

As much as I would like to try this out, it is a Windows Phone with all it's functions. I have a PC already, therefore I think I will stick with my iPhone and Skype for now, or until my needs change.

Apple’s iPhone European Issue, Is Now a North American concern?

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

Apple's iPhone 4 Alarm Clock did not recognize the time change in Europe, therefore owners were either well rested, or extremely inconvenienced by this big oversight. Europeans turned to social media to voice their displeasure.

Apple acknowledged the bug and is set to release a software update to fix this bug. North American users take note, if this bug is not fixed by the 7th of November when daylight savings is adjusted you might be getting a little extra sleep.

Microsoft Internet Explorer Browser All Time Low

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

Did you know that Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser market share has sunk to its all-time-low in April, at under 60 percent, as reported by NetApplications statistics?

NetApplications browser market share statistics for April 2010.

Personally, I prefer Firefox because of it's easy to use add-on and developer kits.  It is good and bad having several  browser options. Obviously it is good for the user, but  for programmers like us, not that great. Why you might ask?  Even though we have standards not all browsers interpret them the same way, and many people still use old browser versions so making a website requires us to check various versions, meaning more time testing.

Fun Fact #1: Who remembers Netscape? Yes, way back when dial-up was all the rave. Anyways it has been over 10 years since IE won over them.

Fun fact #2: IE has just released Internet Explorer 9 Beta

How Secure Is Your Site?

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Do you use just a username and password to access your companies site that contains private and confidential data? Have you ever wondered how you could increase the security of the site and keep it simple? Nerds on Site has implemented the Yubikey  for many of our clients sites and in fact, use it on our own site.

So what does it do and how does it work? The Yubikey plugs into any USB port on your computer or laptop. When you place your finger on the green button, it creates a unique one time password (the value it creates is unique to your key and will never be replicated). You can then use this value to validate against an authentication server.

What does this mean to you?

- If you work in public places or worry about key-loggers or phishing attempts, the Yubikey eliminates this fear because only YOU carry the password to get into your application

- If you worry about your employees using weak passwords, the Yubikey  ensures a strong password is used (in fact on our site we still use user-name and passwords and add Yubikey as a third field)

- The key itself is waterproof, crush resistant and operates without a battery. You can take it anywhere, have it on you at all times and even have it branded to your company’s name (lets link to a picture of ours).

- the key is very affordable which means low entry costs to start using it. All CFO's like the sound of that!

I have my Yubikey, do you?

Beyond Brescia

As part of student services, Brescia University College developed a Co-Curricular Transcript for student experiences. This allowed students to record various experiences like workshops and volunteer positions and have administration create a skills based transcript based on these experiences. The application allows for unlimited students and completely configurable experiences and skills.
